The Asian black bear, also known as the moon bear, has a distinctive pale yellow crescent-shaped patch on its chest. This unique marking is the reason for its nickname, “moon bear.”

Moon bears can live in mountainous areas up to about 3,962 meters above sea level. They typically measure between 1.37 to 1.64 meters in length. Their weight ranges from 89 to 115 kilograms, though large males can weigh up to 181 kilograms. Males are generally larger than females.

These bears are nocturnal. They hunt and forage at night, often guided by the light of the moon. During the day, they rest in caves or large tree hollows. Asian black bears prefer dense forests in mountain regions and humid tropical areas.

They are found across South Asia, Northeast China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and parts of Siberia. Unfortunately, due to the high demand for their gallbladders in traditional medicine, moon bears are often hunted illegally. Many are also captured and kept in poor conditions for bear bile farming.

Because of these threats, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the Asian black bear as Vulnerable, meaning it faces a high risk of extinction in the wild.
