The "Green Dragon" of Cambodia’s Forests and Its Fight for Survival
When people think of "peacocks," they usually picture the common blue-necked bird (Indian Peafowl) seen in zoos around the world. But did you know that Cambodia is one of the last strongholds for a much rarer, more majestic species? This is the Green Peafowl (Pavo muticus).
Distinction and Beauty
The Green Peafowl is often nicknamed the "Green Dragon" due to its shimmering, metallic green scales that glow in the sunlight—a stark contrast to the blue neck of its Indian cousin.
- Size: They are significantly larger, taller, and more upright than the Indian Blue Peafowl.
- The Crest: Their head crest is tall and tightly bundled like a spiked crown, giving them a regal appearance.
- Male vs. Female: Unlike the Indian species where the female is a dull brown, the female Green Peafowl is almost as brightly colored and beautiful as the male, though she lacks the long tail train.
Endangered Status & Habitat in Cambodia
According to the IUCN Red List, the Green Peafowl is classified as Endangered globally. Historically found across Southeast Asia, their numbers have plummeted due to hunting and habitat loss.
Cambodia remains one of the most critical sanctuaries for this species. Significant populations are found in:
- The Northern Plains (Preah Vihear Province).
- The Eastern Plains Landscape (Mondulkiri Province). They prefer open dry deciduous forests near water sources and riverbanks, far from human disturbance.
Threats and Conservation
Why are they disappearing?
- Habitat Loss: Conversion of forests into agricultural land.
- Hunting: Poaching for meat and the illegal pet trade (due to their beauty) is the biggest threat. They are also hunted for their decorative feathers.
- Disturbance: They are extremely shy and sensitive to human activity.
Currently, organizations like WCS Cambodia, BirdLife International, and the Ministry of Environment are actively working to save them. A key initiative is the Bird Nest Protection Program, which pays local community members to guard nests until the chicks successfully hatch, turning former hunters into protectors.
The Green Peafowl is not just a bird; it is a symbol of Cambodia's ecological richness. Protecting them means protecting our forests and river systems. Without urgent conservation efforts, future generations may only know this "Green Dragon" through pictures in history books.
